The new InterStim™ II and InterStim Micro systems provide patients with safe, effective relief from OAB and FI. The InterStim™ II recharge-free system offers patients freedom from a recharging routine, the hassle of recharging components, and a reminder they have a disease. The rechargeable InterStim™ Micro system, the smallest device available in the sacral neuromodulation (SNM) market, benefits patients who want a smaller, longer lasting device. Both systems are full-body* conditional MRI and deliver the same therapy with long-term relief.

“Effective long-term bladder and bowel control is an unmet medical need by many in the St. Petersburg area who experience regular accidents and/or frequency issues associated with OAB and FI. It can significantly impact all aspects of a person’s quality of life – self-confidence, exercise, activities and even intimacy,” said Adam Oppenheim, DO. “By partnering with Medtronic, the trusted leader in SNM therapy, my goal is to help give patients a life without limits.”

Known as sacral neuromodulation (SNM), the therapy is delivered by the InterStim™ system – an implanted medical device that provides gentle stimulation to the sacral nerve and is thought to normalize the brain-bladder connection to alleviate symptoms. Medtronic developed SNM therapy more than 25 years ago in partnership with physicians who specialize in treating incontinence. Recent technology advancements from Medtronic now gives patients lifestyle-friendly choices in the type of InterStim system they choose; improved battery technology; conditional full-body MRI; and the smallest and fastest charging device on the SNM market.

“I must say, I was very impressed with EVERY aspect of my visit with Dr. Oppenheim. His knowledge goes without saying. Top notch. I was taken aback, though, by his patience and kindness. He took the time to listen patiently to the questions I had. I didn’t feel rushed. He answered those questions in a way that was very easy for me to understand. The staff that I encountered were friendly and assistive. I was also glad that any procedures/tests that he recommended I need are done right there at the office, not a hospital. His office and the building in which it’s in is very easy to find. Overall, a great experience. Should the need arise for anyone I know to need a urologist, I’m definitely recommending Dr. Oppenheim and his staff.”

“For much too long, my life revolved around where I would find the next bathroom,” said Wes Linkovich. “I’m so glad I finally sought help and was open-minded about sacral neuromodulation. My therapy fits well with my lifestyle and, finally, I can focus on the things I love. To anyone suffering in silence, please ask your doctor or urologist about the InterStim™ system from Medtronic. I wish I done this sooner.”

Not every patient receives the same benefit, and there are potential risks, which may include surgical, device and stimulation risks.6 St Pete Urology will explain the benefits and risks and help each patient find their best treatment.

About St Pete Urology

Drs.
Dr. Nicholas Laryngakis and Dr. Reid Graves are the first surgeons on Florida’s gulf coast to perform urologic procedures with the newest DaVinci Xi robotic technology.

St Pete Urology surgeons led the way in robotic surgery when they performed the first urologic surgeries in the Florida gulf coast area using the new da Vinci Xi technology – a four-armed surgical robotic platform that offers greater range of motion and reach, according to Dr. Reid Graves, MD.

“St Pete Urology is excited to be the first clinic on the west coast of Florida to use the next generation surgical system as part of our continued effort to offer significant surgical advancements to the community,” Dr. Laryngakis says.

The next generation of da Vinci has broader capabilities than previous versions, Dr. Graves says. It can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures, including colorectal, urology, gynecology, thoracic and general surgery.

“As a surgeon, I am particularly excited by the improvements in this generation of da Vinci, which offers greater vision, dexterity and precision to perform even more complex urologic surgeries,” Dr. Graves says. “This technology truly is a natural extension of a surgeon’s eyes and hands. The da Vinci Xi allows us to provide state-of-the-art technological advancements to our patients facing complex surgical procedures. St Pete Urology continues to lead the way in clinical care.”

“The benefits of using the new robot include smaller incisions, less blood loss, less pain, shorter hospital stays and shorter recovery time,” says Dr. Laryngakis. “The Xi possesses 3D-HD visualization, giving surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands.”

A vasovasostomy, also known as a vasectomy reversal, is a surgical procedure in which the vas deferens tubes are reconnected. Although a vasectomy is considered a permanent birth control option, you can choose to have it reversed in order to be fertile again. The procedure is done using general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia so that you do not move while the surgery takes place. Most facilities, such as urologist in St Petersburg, consider a vasectomy reversal an outpatient procedure, thus overnight hospitalization is not required.

Post-Surgical Expectations

The procedure itself can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, in addition to a couple more hours for the anesthesia to wear off. In cases where the vas deferens tubes and epididymis are blocked, the surgery may take longer.

Pain medication will be administered immediately after the procedure to take care of any pain or discomfort. Once your doctor approves it, you will be sent home the same day of the surgery. Most patients return to their regular activities 21 days after the vasectomy reversal.

Results

Although the majority of people that undergo vasectomy reversal surgery are successful, the amount of time that has passed since the vasectomy can affect results. Doctors believe people have a greater chance of success if the vasovasostomy is performed within 10 years of the vasectomy. As time passes, problems such as blocked tubes or formation of antibodies to sperm are more likely to develop.

In most cases, vasectomy reversal surgery:

Enables pregnancy in 50% of patients.

Is most successful when performed within 3 years of the vasectomy.

Leads to conception in 30% of patients if the procedure is done before 10 years of the vasectomy.

Risks

Some of the risks associated with vasectomy reversal surgery include:

Infection

Swelling and edema in the scrotum.

Arterial or nerve damage in the scrotum.

Before Deciding on Vasectomy Reversal Surgery

Before opting for vasectomy in St Petersburg, your physician will need to determine whether you are fertile. This can be done with a before and after test that checks your semen for sperm antibodies. If there are antibodies present, the chances of pregnancy are low and an alternative method such as in vitro fertilization may be recommended.
